An Update on my Big "D"

I think I am finally getting some control over my BG levels. My fasting in the morning used to be 170-200 now it is about 130-140. I just got back from vacation and I return to work today so now I can start getting into some sort of workout schedule. I joined a few online discussion groups which has really been helpful, I truly enjoy chatting with other diabetes patients. I am slowly letting family and friends know about my diabetes. I think its important that people get out and have their annual physicals, I don't want people in my family or circle of friends to end up like me - no feeling in their feet! I just started to feel some numbness in my tongue, I am not sure if this a symptom of neuropathy.

Well, thats the latest with me and my battle with Big "D".

Diabetes 101

Today I attended my very first Diabetes class. I have to say I was looking forward to it because after being diagnosed with diabetes I was scared to eat. One thing I will say that will be hard for me to overcome is giving up on my Golden Flake potato chips and cutting down on my carbohydrates. I am the Carb Queen!

I had a lot of my questions answered today, like why my BG is high after working out, and what my BG should be, and what the heck is a A1c. I found out today that my A1c is 10.3 and my goal is to get that down to at least 6.9. I need to have my A1c tested every 3 months until is gets down to a healthy level. I also found out that the nerve damage in my feet MAY NOT get any better. In fact, she told me that it may get worse before it gets better...YIKES, these Kaiser people are harsh.

So, I know what I have to do, I need to take my medication (metformin), eat less carbs to get my bg (blood glucose) down to at least 120 (it is over 200 now) and I need to exercise. Oddly enough....the one I may have difficulty with is the low carbs.

Back to feeling scared

After I found out that I had diabetes, I wanted to call my old friend Mike, because I knew he was living with Big "D" too. But then I remembered that he and I weren't talking to each other and I didn't want to just up and call him. But as faith would have it, I went to a party last night and there he was!! I called him over to my table and told him that I had the Big "D", the first thing he did was to look at my plate to see what I was eating (I just had one chicken wing and some fruit). I asked him questions about what my blood sugar level should be both in the morning and at night, I asked him about his medications and he was so helpful.

He then informed me that he was going blind in one of his eyes...YIKES...! I was sad because he seemed to be doing everything right, and the doctors keep telling you that this is a disease that we can live with. Well, I am back to feeling scared again.

Let's get ready to Rumble!

This week I found out that I have type 2 Diabetes. My glucose level was 260 and me not really understanding what that means I turned to the Internet for advice. I found some great websites and message boards and I am determined to not let this disease beat me. My doctor (Dr. Joy Church) was great at keeping things real with me. At 5'2" and 194 lbs I am OBESE and I NEED to lose weight (at least 60 lbs) if i am going to live a long and healthy life - even with Diabetes. I also need to change the way I eat. But I will say in my defense is that I do workout more than most may think. I Hit the gym at least 3 days a week and that will not change.

So come on diabetes....LET"S GET READY TO RUMBLE...because I plan on kick your ass!!
